Lanterns: Lighting Our Way

There are some of you that may be old enough to remember the time when all of the lanterns were used as the primary light source, particularly within rural area before electricity became available widely. During this time, lanterns lit the path to the barn and the way to the outhouse. Lanterns can be classified as any lighting device that is portable and that are used in order to provide light to large areas.

Within signaling, lanterns are also used, and they are used widely for camping. The candle lantern is quiet possibly the simplest of the lantern forms and more than likely it is also the first. With the candle lanterns, there is a candle placed within a metal box that has glass sides and a top that remains open. On the other hand, you have the kerosene lanterns that are also known as the hurricane lanterns.

During the nineteen century up until the twentieth century, kerosene lanterns were commonly used. The kerosene lanterns or either a version of these lanterns, are still being used by outdoorsmen and campers. The reason that the kerosene lanterns are ruggedly built is for portability. All of the side tubes and the metal chimney strongly supports the glass globe as well as enhances the air draft that is reaches the flame.

Railroad cars, horse drawn carriages and ships were among all of the kerosene lanterns early uses. Once electricity became widely available and all of the improvements were made to all of the devices that were battery operated the use of the kerosene lanterns decreased. All of the kerosene lanterns from the nineteenth century have been replaced largely by the modern lanterns that are fueled and the fluorescent lamp models that are battery operated.

Since handling liquid forms of fuel is known to be very dangerous, the majority of the modern lanterns use a very small and disposable steel cylinder in order to enclose all of the fuel and it is simply disposed of once it is empty. Most likely, this fuel is going to be propane. However, there are some lanterns that are being used today that use ethanol, kerosene, and diesel.

All of the modern electric lanterns managed to become extremely popular because these lanterns are a lot safer to use and they are a whole lot easier to use, all of the advancements that have been made have made them a lot more durable. There are some lanterns that use a simple, basic light bulb and there are others that are known to use a fluorescent fixture that is more efficient.

All of these lanterns either use the rechargeable or disposable batteries that are eventually going to have to be replaced or either the rechargeable batteries that are permanently installed.
